The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the strangest roster moves, as they cut veteran wide receiver Robert Woods. With a weaker wide receiver room, it was odd that the team was willing to cut down on potential playmakers for Aaron Rodgers.
Pittsburgh Steelers Make Head-Scratching Roster Cut
Just a day after cutting Woods, it was announced that he would return to the Steelers’ practice squad. However, his stay might be facing a major roadblock.
Veteran WR Robert Woods plans to re-sign with the #Steelers practice squad for now, per source.
Other teams showed interest in Woods before the cutdown, so it could be a temporary situation. Players on practice squads are free to sign elsewhere anytime.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported on Woods returning to the Steelers’ practice squad, but he also indicated that his stay could be temporary. The veteran wideout might want to join a team where he can carve out a bigger role.

Woods was apparently garnering interest from other teams, and it could be that he is waiting for the right opportunity. The good news is the Steelers have him as part of the practice squad, but he may leave if a better opportunity comes along.
Practice squad players are given the freedom to sign with other teams whenever, so Woods might join a team that needs a wide receiver to step into a significant role. That was the belief for the Steelers, but his release says otherwise.
Woods may just find a better role on the Steelers, but he is up against DK Metcalf, Calvin Austin III, and Scotty Miller for the starting roles. Backups include Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek.
Oddly enough, this wide receiver corps points to Woods being given a sizeable role, even at the backup position. However, that appears not to be the case.
Should Woods stay, he can work his way into a larger role, but he will be on the practice squad first. The Steelers need all the help they can get on the receiving side, so it will be interesting to see if Woods heads for another team.
