Ted Danson played legendary womanizer Sam Malone on the beloved sitcom Cheers, so his now-wife Mary Steenburgen thought that he was “maybe kind of a slick guy” before she met him. But the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist actress, 71, revealed that her first impression was more than a little off — especially when it comes to the bedroom.
At the Golden Gala red carpet on Friday, January 3, Steenburgen explained to People how it felt when she first met Danson, now 77. “I admired him so much as an actor, but I didn’t personally know him,” she explained, continuing that her impression of him as “slick” was a “stupid idea.” After 30 years of marriage, however, she wanted to set the record straight.
“How wrong I was,” she went on to say. “Slick guys don’t say, ‘gosh-a-rooni,’ after making love.” After revealing this rather intimate detail, Steenburgen added, “I’d like to apologize to my granddaughters.”
Steenburgen has three granddaughters via her daughter Lily, 43, whom she shares with ex-husband Malcolm McDowell. She and McDowell also have a son, director Charlie McDowell, who is 41. Danson, for his part, shares daughters Kate, 46, and Alexis, 40, with his ex, Casey Coates.
After gently mocking her husband, she went on to effusively praise the Man on the Inside actor, who she says is “treasured by everyone who works with him” and “sets the tone” for his fellow actors on set.
“As his wife, watching the respect and love that crews have for Ted has always made me very proud of him,” she told the outlet. “I also fell in love with the sort of father that he is and with his beloved daughters … Ted loves them with all his heart and yet had space in there to love my Lilly and Charlie so perfectly as well.”
