The Housemaid director Paul Feig says Sydney Sweeney filmed the thriller amid her breakup from former fiancé Jonathan Davino.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday, August 20, Feig, 62, recalled that Sweeney, 27, “was completely present emotionally” during filming and was “just up for anything, and really didn’t bring any issues to set.”
He continued, “And I know she was going through some things when this was going on — I mean, now everybody knows about her engagement falling apart and breaking off and all that.”
On occasion, Feig would talk to Sweeney and, “I’d say, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ and she’d go, ‘I’m fine, I’m great!’ but not defensively.”
He told the outlet that the Euphoria star “loves to work.” Meanwhile, Sweeney did not answer a question about the nature of her post-split professional dynamic with Davino. The exes founded a production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, five years ago.
“I’m going to keep all of my personal stuff out of it,” said Sweeney, who spoke to the WSJ about her acting roles and that controversial American Eagle campaign.
Us Weekly exclusively confirmed in March that Sweeney and Davino, 42, had called off their wedding plans and parted ways.
“They were supposed to get married this spring,” a source told Us at the time. “The wedding is not happening, and they aren’t having further discussions about it. Sydney wanted to cancel everything and couldn’t handle the stress. A lot of their issues stem from Sydney being extremely busy with work commitments.”
Sweeney broke her silence about the split in a May interview with The Times of London.
“I’m learning a lot about myself [and] spending more time with my friends,” she said of being single. “I’m loving it.”
Sweeney and Davino had been dating since 2018, keeping a low profile amid her growing fame and increasingly packed schedule.
“I took three weeks off in April last year,” she said, adding that she works around the clock and sleeps just four hours each night. “There’s 24 hours in a day, obviously, but I make sure that there are 26 for me.”
In May, photos published by Page Six showed Sweeney hugging pal Machine Gun Kelly at a Las Vegas club opening. Dating rumors ensued. MGK, 35, responded three months later during an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. Andy Cohen read a question from viewer “Kyle P.,” who wanted “to know if there’s any truth to the rumor that you and Sydney Sweeney were more than just friends.”
The musician shook his head and stared into the camera, saying, “Kyle P., shut up, dude,” getting a laugh from the studio audience.
