The transfer portal has officially opened in college football, and the only word to describe it is chaos.
Thousands of players from across the country have expressed their intent to transfer programs during the next two weeks, and now begins a million phone calls, text messages and agent meetings to see where where (and if) they land at a new school.
One of the biggest names in the entire free agency period is former College Football Playoff quarterfinalist quarterback Sam Leavitt. The former Arizona State Sun Devil was astonishing in his first full year back in 2024 as part of Kenny Dillingham’s Big 12 championship squad alongside Cam Skattebo.
Leavitt put on an iconic performance in a losing effort to Texas in that quarterfinal and entered 2025 not only as a Heisman contender but possible top-10 NFL draft pick if everything came together.
Instead, injuries sidelined him, and he has opted to choose a different path than finishing his college career in the desert.

Leavitt entered the transfer portal on Friday with a “do not contact” tag, meaning he does not want other schools to reach out to him or his agent. Usually, when this happens, it means a player has already narrowed down his choices or knows exactly where he will sign for the upcoming season.
In his two years starting for the Sun Devils, Leavitt threw for 4,513 yards and 34 touchdowns. He was also effective with his legs, rushing for 749 yards and adding 10 more TDs.
LSU, Miami, and Oregon have all been considered strong contenders to sign the dual-threat star since it was known he would be entering the transfer window.
The transfer portal officially closes on Jan. 16, 2026.
