Independent MP Sophie Scamps has praised the resolve of Ali France, the Labor MP who navigated personal heartbreak to become one of the first women of disability to be elected to the House of Representatives after unseating Peter Dutton at the May election, saying she was the “personification of strength”.

France delivered her first speech to parliament on Tuesday, where she recalled the week before her 19-year-old son died after an 18-month battle with leukemia last year, and the physical hardship she has endured since losing her leg in a 2011 car accident.

Scamps was full of praise for France when discussing her first speech on Nine’s Today this morning.

“It was incredibly humbling to be in the House while she gave that speech, and there wasn’t a dry eye,” Scamps said.

“She was very, very humble in acknowledging all the people along her life’s journey that have given her support and kindness, and said that she also wants to lead in a way that represents kindness, strength, caring, all those types of things. So it was a wonderful speech.”
