President Donald Trump’s approval rating on gasoline has hit “rock bottom,” according to a new poll from Navigator Research released on Wednesday.
The poll was conducted before the president announced the ceasefire deal with Iran on Tuesday night, ahead of his self-imposed deadline, when he threatened to bring the Middle East country’s civilization to an end.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment.
Why It Matters
Recent surveys have shown Trump facing record or near‑record lows within key demographics, including men and independent voters, potentially compounding headwinds for the White House amid public concern over the cost of living in the U.S. and relations with Iran.
Multiple trackers also show the president significantly underwater nationally on key issues like the economy, jobs, immigration and prices.
What To Know
According to the poll, Trump’s approval rating on gasoline is 28 percent versus a 65 percent disapproval rating. Navigator Research said “Trump’s Approval on Gas Prices Hits Rock Bottom” in the survey, adding in part that “The rise in gas prices reveals fractures within the GOP.”
The poll was taken from April 2 to April 6 among 1,375 respondents, with a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
The survey shows that 87 percent acknowledge that gasoline prices are rising, and 60 percent say they’re increasing significantly. Thirty-three percent of non-MAGA Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of the issue compared with 54 percent who disapprove, the poll shows.
According to the survey, 71 percent blamed the war in Iran for the recent rise in gas prices, and 48 percent blamed Trump and congressional Republicans.
Trump’s overall approval rating with the pollster is 40 percent versus 58 percent disapproval.
During his address to the nation last week, Trump said in part that “many Americans have been concerned to see the recent rise in gasoline prices here at home. This short-term increase has been entirely the result of the Iranian regime launching deranged terror attacks against commercial oil tankers and neighboring countries that have nothing to do with the conflict.”
What People Are Saying
GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan, on X Tuesday after Trump’s ceasefire announcement: “Gas prices could start reversing nationally in 48 hours or so- by a few cents every day. Diesel prices may lag slightly- but where things stand now, diesel is NO longer likely to reach a record. National average gasoline could fall below $4 in ~1-2 weeks, diesel >$5 in 6-8 weeks”
In a follow-up post De Haan said that “these levels are tentative based on current markets, changes are highly likely as the situation unfolds.”
Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, on X Wednesday: “Gas prices keep rising with no signs of stopping. How much more financial pain is Trump going to force on working families because of his war of choice?”
