The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled fighter jets in response to Russian military aircraft detected near Alaska.
Two Russian Tupolev TU-142 military aircraft were spotted in international airspace in the Alaskan and Canadian Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ). The Tupolev Tu-142 is a maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
In response, NORAD launched two U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter aircraft, two F-22 fighter aircraft, four KC-135 tankers, one E-3 AWACS, two Canadian CF-18 fighter aircraft, and one CC-150 tanker.
NORAD said in a statement that the Russian aircraft did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, and that “this Russian activity in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”
This is a developing story. More to follow.
