Red Dead Redemption came out 15 years ago for PC and consoles, but now a mobile version of the open-world Western is out for iOS and Android devices, and it’s available for Netflix subscribers at no additional charge.
The mobile version is a faithful port of the original game as well as its expansion, Undead Nightmares. It costs $40 when buying from the app stores, but again, it’s included with a Netflix subscription.

How to get Red Dead Redemption with a Netflix subscription
If you have a Netflix subscription, you don’t have to pay the $40 to play Red Dead Redemption on your iOS or Android device. You will, however, need a compatible device to run the game.
Android devices need to have Android 11 or higher, 6GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 or 8 processor or a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus processor. For Apple devices, the phone will need to be an iPhone 11 or better.
If you have a compatible device, here are the next steps to take:
- Visit the App Store or Google Play Store. Search for Red Dead Redemption and make sure to select the Netflix version.
- Download the game.
- Start the game and click “Next” to sign in to your Netflix account.
- Input the email or phone number and password for the Netflix account.
- After successfully signing in, select the Netflix profile that will be playing and download the rest of the game.
Red Dead Redemption can also be downloaded through the Games section on the Netflix app.
What control type is best for Red Dead Redemption?
There are three ways to play Red Dead Redemption: mobile controllers, standard controllers and touch controls. Considering the sheer size of the game and how it plays, some considerations need to be made when deciding which is best.
Mobile controller
An open-world game like Red Dead Redemption needs a controller. It’s simply the best way to play. For the best combination of comfort and controls, you need a mobile controller. Those playing on an iPhone or Android device can use a controller like the Razer Kishi, Backbone One or Gamesir G8. Players gaming on a small tablet can go with one of the bigger mobile controllers like the Kishi Ultra or GameSir G8 Plus.
A downside of these controllers is that they’re not cheap.
Standard controller
If you don’t want to splurge on a mobile gaming controller, then one faithful option is a regular console or PC controller. Both the PlayStation and Xbox controllers can connect with an Android or iOS device via Bluetooth.
The advantage of a game controller is its familiarity, especially if you’ve already used one to play Red Dead Redemption on another platform. A big disadvantage is what to do with your phone or tablet, since it’ll need to be placed on a flat surface while playing, as your hands will be otherwise occupied.
Touch controls
And coming in as the last resort to play Red Dead Redemption are the touch controls, and these are truly the final option to play this game. While the touch controls are responsive and provide all the needed functions for playing, they are just not ideal for long sessions.
Like with other open-world games that make use of touch controls, you’ll need to use one thumb to move while the other controls the camera. This would be fine except you also need to aim, shoot and run, which means taking a thumb off from moving or camera controls to do another action.
