Netflix’s Unknown Number: The High School Catfish explored Lauryn Licari being cyberstalked and harassed by mother Kendra Licari — but where are they now?
The documentary, which premiered in August, unpacked a real-life case from Michigan where Lauryn and her then-boyfriend, Owen McKenny, received concerning text messages in 2020. From there, the messages briefly stopped before returning a year later with more graphic threats.
Lauryn at one point got up to 40 to 50 messages a day before the FBI stepped in — and revealed that Kendra was behind the harassment. Kendra was arrested and pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor: one count each for Lauryn and Owen. She was sentenced to 19 months in prison and was released in August 2024. As part of her arrest, Kendra wasn’t allowed to remain in contact with her victims, including her daughter.
Since being released in 2024, Kendra and Lauryn haven’t been able to see each other in person. While Lauryn initially wanted to remain close with Kendra, her tune appeared to change after discussing her story for Netflix.

How Did Kendra Get Outed?
In 2020, Lauryn and Owen were both 13 years old when they became victims of relentless cyberbullying. The catfish specifically harassed Lauryn over her romance with Owen, which caused them to question whether it was a fellow student or an adult in their hometown of Beal City, Michigan.
Kendra, who was interviewed in the docuseries, denied sending the initial messages. She confirmed that she harassed her daughter and Owen on social media as a way to get officials to take the original catfish seriously before it escalated.
The school’s superintendent Bill Chillman had a different take when interviewed for Unknown Number, calling it “cyber Munchausen’s case.”
“She wanted her daughter to need her in such a way that she was willing to hurt her, and this is the way she chose to do that, versus physically trying to make her ill, which is typical Munchausen’s behavior,” he said in the August 2025 doc.
Where Is Kendra Now?
Lauryn’s mother was asked about the texts she sent urging her daughter to harm herself, to which she told Unknown Number’s director, “I can say I was not scared of her hurting herself.”
Owen and his mother, Jill McKenny, were also featured in the doc where they both accused Kendra of tormenting her daughter because she had a crush on Owen. Kendra, meanwhile, claimed she was raped at age 17 and her concerning behavior was a result of an undiagnosed mental illness that stemmed from her trauma.
“I didn’t want her to go through that process that I did, and I think that really led me to not know how to handle things,” Kendra said, adding that she was “scared to let [Lauryn] grow up” because of “what could happen to her.”
Lauryn, for her part, initially said in the doc that she would like to see her mom “when the time is right.”
“I hope me and my mom can rebuild our relationship, because I feel like I’m definitely missing a part of me,” she shared. “Now that she’s out [of prison], I just want her to get the help that she needs, so then, when we see each other, it doesn’t go back to the old ways and how it was before.”
Lauryn added: “Being without that relationship I think is really hurting me, and I think rebuilding our relationship will help both of us a lot. I love her more than anything.”
Where Is Lauryn Now?
Speaking of Lauryn, her mother’s arrest brought her closer with her father, Shawn Licari, who received full custody. Lauryn is currently dating someone new from high school and is planning to attend college and study criminology.
Director Skye Borgman spoke with Netflix’s Tudum in August 2025 about how Lauryn has been doing “a lot of pretty critical thinking” about what happened between her and her mother since being interviewed for the doc.
“She is at the beginning of figuring out that she can be the one in charge, that she can make all the decisions for herself and for her relationship with her mother,” Borgman shared. “I think that’s going to be a really interesting place for Lauryn to explore.”
Where Is Owen Now?
While Owen’s relationship with Lauryn ended before her mother was unmasked as their bully, the duo have remained no contact in the years since.
“I see him in the hallways and stuff, but we don’t really have interactions at all,” Lauryn said before Owen added, “I was mad at Lauryn. I don’t think I will talk to her in the future.”
Owen has since graduated from high school and now attends college in Michigan.
