The New York Yankees entered Monday trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by two games in the American League East.

With just six games left to play, the Yankees have some ground to make up. José Caballero has become an integral part of the Yankees’ late-season success, and he figures to play a key role down the stretch.

Caballero is slashing .274/.327/.479 with three home runs in 36 starts with the Yankees. Aaron Boone is giving him more starts, and he has even gotten opportunities over Anthony Volpe at shortstop. However, Boone just revealed that Caballero has not been at full strength.

“He’s just been dealing with a finger that acts up on him, really for the last couple months,” Boone said, per the New York Post’s Greg Joyce. “So every now and then on a swing it bugs him.”

Caballero was in pain after striking out in the fifth inning on Sunday. He was seen walking down toward the clubhouse, but returned to play shortstop.

Caballero plays solid defense, leads baseball in stolen bases, and has given the Yankees a jolt. The Yankees struggled in June and July, but entered Monday 18-8 since Aug. 24. The Yankees have not clinched a postseason berth yet, but they seem like locks to be playing next month.

The finger seemingly has not affected him much. However, it is something to monitor as the Yankees head into October. Caballero’s versatility and baserunning have been vital to the Yankees’ recent success. If he is not at 100% it could be something that holds the Yankees back from making a deep run in October.
