River cruising is certainly having a moment. Once regarded as a niche holiday option, it has evolved into one of the fastest-growing sectors of the cruise industry, attracting passengers seeking slower, more immersive journeys.

Europe’s most iconic waterways – including the Danube, Rhine, Seine and Douro – remain the heart of the market, with demand fuelled by smaller ships, longer stays in historic cities and an increasing focus on wellness and cultural experiences.

While river cruise passengers are looking to slow down, the industry’s momentum is not. According to data released by TUI Group, around 1.5 million passengers travelled on European river cruises in 2025, an increase of 8% on the previous year.

Reflecting that sustained growth, AmaWaterways has unveiled the first details of the “AmaRudi”, which will become Europe’s largest river cruise ship when it launches on the Danube in spring 2027.

Building on the success of the AmaMagna, AmaWaterways’ second double-width vessel will accommodate 196 guests across 98 staterooms and suites.

Designed specifically for the Danube, the vessel will include balcony suites ranging from 355 to 710 square feet. Onboard, guests can choose from four dining venues, unwind in the Zen Wellness Studio, or enjoy a game on the full-sized pickleball court.

The ship is named after AmaWaterways co-founder Rudi Schreiner, who said: “AmaMagna changed what travellers believed was possible on a river cruise ship. We knew there would be a right time to revisit that concept, and with river cruising continuing to grow, that time is now.

“More travellers are making the transition from ocean cruising to rivers, and many are looking for a sense of space and choice. AmaMagna was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, so having this new ship carry my name makes it especially meaningful. I see it as part of the legacy we have built together over more than two decades of river cruising.”

What’s onboard? BBQs, wellness and a cinema…

AmaRudi will introduce several new features. Dining will include Journey’s Restaurant, The Chef’s Table speciality venue, al fresco options, a new Rudi’s Wine Bar and an expanded drinks programme featuring more than 30 complimentary wines served with lunch and dinner. A Deck Club barbecue on the Sun Deck will further broaden the onboard culinary offering.

The ship will also feature one of the most comprehensive wellness programmes on Europe’s rivers, including massage treatment rooms, a fitness centre, beauty services and guided classes led by AmaWaterways’ wellness hosts.

A full-sized pickleball court will add to the active lifestyle offering, while a new entertainment venue will feature a cinema, karaoke, billiards and jukebox.

The AmaRudi’s inaugural cruise will be along the Danube River departing 11 April 2027 from Vilshofen in Germany. The ship will also operate some of AmaWaterways’ most popular itineraries, including “Magna on the Danube” and “Gems of Southeast Europe”.
