Explosive motive for execution-style killing of high schooler emerges, his father erupts

A teenage couple allegedly killed a high school senior execution-style over an unproven rumor he raped someone, cops have suggested.

Cassandra Michael and Byron Rangel chatted about the allegation against Caleb Quick before they allegedly gunned him down outside a McDonald’s in Fresno in April 2025.

The sex attack was said to have occurred a few weeks earlier after a house party in Clovis on April 13, testimony in a transfer hearing revealed.

Multiple teenagers told investigators they had heard claims Quick assaulted an intoxicated girl connected to a friend of the accused, the Fresno Bee reports.

The 18-year-old was shot in the back of the head in a parking lot outside the McDonald’s allegedly by the two 16-year-olds.

The pair, who were a couple, have been charged with murder and prosecutors are weighing up whether they can be tried as adults.

During testimony, Detective Emily Eide said the alleged rape victim girl described Quick as someone who “was like a brother to me.”

Her account to investigators was inconsistent, at times describing the incident as assault and at other times expressing uncertainty about whether she had consented.

Authorities said the girl had been drinking heavily and lost memory of what happened after falling asleep.

Other teens believed she would be safe with Quick, who drove her home, according to Detective Lovedeep Malhi.

Police later recovered videos of the alleged assault from Quick’s phone. Malhi testified, “I don’t know how many he sent her, but they were extracted from his phone.”

Investigators also said Quick sent at least one video to the girl the following morning.

Prosecutors are continuing to present evidence as they examine whether the allegations played a role in the killing.

Quick’s father strongly rejected any suggestion that the allegations could justify the killing.

“It’s not a justification for this behavior — premeditated first-degree murder,” Stephen Quick told the Bee outside court on Friday.

“They acted on it like vengeance. They had 24 hours to make this decision, and whatever allegations they had against him, it was not within their authority to act on. That’s why we have laws.”

He described his son, who was set to graduate, as a “good kid.” The high school senior was shot in an alleyway near a McDonald’s in Clovis just weeks before graduation.

Security video shown in court from a nearby Shop-N-Go captured Quick leaving the restaurant with friends. According to ABC30, one of his friends held the door open for the alleged suspect as they exited.

Authorities say the 16-year-old suspect had been waiting in the area for at least 13 minutes before approaching Quick.

The video then shows a flash as the suspect opens fire. One of Quick’s friends immediately rushed to help him, while another called 911.

The footage provides one of the clearest looks so far at what happened, nearly one year after Quick’s death.
