Scott Porter knows Ginny & Georgia fans aren’t happy with Paul, which he feels is a little hypocritical.
“Here’s the thing, this audience will forgive Georgia forever. For anything that she will ever do,” Porter, 46, said in a Sunday, August 10, interview with YouTuber Joe Vulpis. “If you do one thing to spite Georgia, you are wiped off the Earth as far as so many people are concerned.”
The actor argued that Paul’s reaction to Georgia’s (Brianne Howey) lies “was correct,” but his actions were “wrong.” Porter was specifically referring to a scene in season 3, which premiered earlier this summer, where Paul got so angry that he hit a wall above Georgia’s head, triggering her PTSD from past abusive relationships.
“The physical action of hitting a cabinet out of frustration — and you can see it immediately in his eyes — [invokes] immediate regret because he knows what that means to her,” Porter elaborated on Sunday. “He knows what it did to her and he didn’t do it purposefully. It was something that he wished he could take back.”
Porter understood the emotion behind Paul’s behavior, adding, “But he loved her in spite of all the things that she told him. I think people forget all the secrets that Paul uncovered over the course of their relationship and still forgave and moved on and trusted and loved and asked for a partnership that she was never willing to give him.”
Season 3 ended with Paul hitting rock bottom, and Porter has been trying to explain Paul’s perspective ever since. Georgia’s marriage to Paul fell apart amid her murder trial, especially after Paul found out that Georgia was linked to the deaths of her ex-husbands — which she didn’t mention to him earlier.
The situation only got worse when Georgia used daughter Ginny’s (Antonia Gentry) positive pregnancy test to trick Paul into staying with her. While Georgia initially lied about being pregnant, she realized during the season 3 finale that she is expecting a baby, but it is unclear whether Paul or Joe (Raymond Ablack) is the father.
“Listen, our show deals in high drama. We rarely take the easy way out,” Porter exclusively teased to Us Weekly in June. “If you want all of this craziness to continue, it being Paul’s baby is pretty interesting.”
Porter could also see why Joe is a contender, telling Us, “The show has definitely let you know that there is something that needs to be explored with Joe and Georgia. If you want to see that to its complete [and] happy ending — which I’m not sure we get on our show — then Joe should be the dad.”
While Paul and Georgia’s relationship was over by the end of season 3, Porter didn’t rule out the possibility that they would eventually return to each other’s lives in the future.
“[Her ex] Gil is going to prison for good now. [Georgia’s son], Austin, is still there and I think Paul and Austin have a very special relationship,” he continued. “I love that relationship and I would love to see that continue. I think that Paul has a desire to still be involved in Austin’s life — even if he’s not 100 percent involved in the family. Georgia’s still a massive force in his town of Wellsbury. They’re going to cross paths and she’s definitely going to be involved in the goings on. So Paul is going to have to face her.”
Porter concluded: “Maybe we could get back to a little bit more of that wit and that banter where they’re light with each other on the surface. But I think that would be such a fun thing to do in season 4. They’re definitely not out of each other’s lives for good. I don’t know whose baby it is. I don’t know what happens with the baby. I don’t know anything happening in season 4, but I think that Paul and Georgia dynamic will still exist.”
Ginny & Georgia is currently streaming on Netflix.
