Rory McIlroy, last year’s Masters champion, has spent the past week fully immersed in Augusta, walking the grounds at Augusta National Golf Club, taking in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, and handing out hardware at the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.
But just days before the tournament begins, the focus shifted.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s Champions Dinner, McIlroy addressed two of the biggest storylines heading into the Masters, acknowledging the glaring absence that neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson will be in attendance for his Masters Club dinner.
More than that, neither legend will compete.
“Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won’t be in that room, which is a shame, but I want to make sure that they’re acknowledged as well,” McIlroy told Golf Channel. “They’ve been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen.”

The absence of both icons is seismic.
Woods, a five-time Masters champion and arguably the most influential figure in modern golf, is out following a DUI arrest tied to a late-March car crash in Florida.
The incident triggered immediate fallout, legal proceedings, intense public scrutiny, and ultimately a decision to step away from the sport to seek treatment overseas.
His removal from the Masters field, despite lifetime eligibility, marks another chapter in a career increasingly defined by battles off the course, often overshadowing his accomplishments on it.
This will be his second straight missed Masters, but under far more troubling circumstances.
Mickelson’s situation is quieter, but no less impactful.
The three-time Masters winner withdrew due to a serious family health matter, stepping away from competition for an extended period.
While less controversial, it still removes one of Augusta’s most enduring and charismatic contenders from the stage.
Together, their absence snaps a remarkable streak: since 1994, at least one of Woods or Mickelson had teed it up at Augusta every year.
That continuity is now gone.
