Anika Wells has accused One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor of “going off half-cocked” for suggesting the Telstra outage could be linked to the Chinese missile test in the Pacific earlier this week.
“What I can confirm, as the comms minister, is that Telstra says there is no evidence to suggest that is the case, and I think those parliamentarians should account for why they would behave so irresponsibly on a day when people just want their services back online,” Wells told reporters in Canberra.
Wells said she had spoken to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke about the prospect of foreign interference and was “assured by his answers”.
“I’m sure that as we get more information, we would be happy to provide that to you, but as of today, there is no current evidence to suggest that is the case, apart from two parliamentarians going off half-cocked, to be honest,” she said.
