Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Tuesday that two “offending supertankers” have been hit and disabled in the Strait of Hormuz after the ships ignored warnings, turned off navigation systems and attempted to pass through “a mined route”, Iranian media reported, citing a statement from the IRGC.
The IRGC, in its statement to Iranian media, said the US was “inciting vessels to use an illegal route” and that co-operation with the “aggressor enemy” would result in damage, delays in reopening the strait and a global energy crisis.
The US launched strikes on Iran early on Tuesday morning, and Iran responded with attacks targeting Bahrain and on the two tankers associated with the United Arab Emirates that were travelling through the strait.
One mariner was reportedly killed and eight wounded in the attack on the ships.
