A convicted drug trafficker was the target of an alleged underworld kill plot only foiled after police stumbled upon a suspicious BMW driving through a suburban Sydney street while conducting their general duties.
Police sources confirmed Ayman Tamer, convicted for commercial drug supply in 2019 as part of a push to dismantle a syndicate selling ice and cannabis across Sydney, was the subject of the contract that brought together several groups to perform the hit. Four people were charged over the plot on Thursday following sweeping raids across Sydney, with more arrests expected.
Officers became suspicious after spotting a man in the grey luxury vehicle on Columbine Avenue in Bankstown on September 26, covering his face with a hoodie and surgical mask and with cloned plates on the car.
The driver sped from the officers when approached, triggering a pursuit and a search of the area. A loaded pistol was thrown from the car, before the BMW was dumped in Revesby. The driver and passenger are still at large.
The matter was referred to the state’s anti-gang detectives under Taskforce Falcon, established in May amid spiralling violence linked to Sydney’s underworld.
Detectives say they uncovered a large-scale assassination plot, finding that some of those allegedly targeting Tamer also took out a contract to firebomb a vehicle in Riverstone the following month.
Tamer has been the target of multiple assassination plots, and is allegedly involved in various forms of criminality. Police believe he works in isolation, and is not aligned with one criminal network or group.
Taskforce Falcon Commander Jason Box has been “maintaining dialogue” with Tamer, saying he was “thankful” that police were able to protect his safety.
“On more than one occasion, persons were acting covertly and overtly to murder this person,” Box said.
“He’s aware of the threats. With most people that are involved in this type of activity, I think it’s expected in some shape or form, they will be targeted to the level of violence.”
The alleged director of the group, Chris Faigafa, 26, was charged with conspiracy to murder Tamer, agreeing to carry out the Riverstone firebombing, and participating in a criminal group.
Robin Faumiuna, 21, was charged with conspiracy to murder, three counts of possessing an unregistered firearm, and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
Two other alleged group members, Osman Sabsabi, 21, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been charged with performing surveillance on Tamer. They are also charged with participating in criminal activity.
The driver and passenger detected in the BMW are expected to be arrested “very soon”, Box said.
Faigafa, Faumiuna and Sabsabi were refused bail on Thursday, ahead of appearances in Campbelltown and Bankstown Local Courts on Friday. The 17-year-old was bailed under strict conditions, and will return to court in May.
Tamer was sentenced to seven years and 10 months’ imprisonment in December 2019 after pleading guilty to the supply of a large commercial quantity of drugs. He had been in custody since his Oyster Bay home was raided in March 2017.
Tamer’s sentence was reduced on appeal, and he was released from prison following the end of his non-parole period in September 2021.
He was charged with aggravated kidnapping, later withdrawn, and causing actual bodily harm in February 2024. He remains on bail ahead of a court appearance in August.
