The saga involving the New York Giants and nose tackle Dexter Lawrence II may reveal he’s closer to a trade to a new team, as contract negotiations between him and the team have reportedly “broken off.”

Yesterday, Giants general manager Joe Schoen indicated during a pre-NFL Draft press conference that there were “productive conversations” being had with Lawrence, and that they “would like to have him” on the roster for the upcoming season.

However, it appears things might not be going as well as Schoen previously stated.

New details have emerged from the NY Daily News’ Pat Leonard via sources, indicating that the situation involving Lawrence and the Giants has become “dire.” Along with that, it appears there is “significant” interest from other teams in bringing Lawrence to their rosters via trade.

He publicly asked for a trade earlier this month because his earnings were lower than those of other players in the league. He has two years remaining on his contract, ranking 11th in the league in pay at his position.

Lawrence, a 2019 first-round pick from Clemson, signed a contract extension in May 2023. However, he performed well enough that he felt his contract deserved renegotiation based on the value of interior defensive linemen in the NFL, or that he should get traded to another team.

And, based on the recent NY Daily News report, the Giants are receiving “significant” interest from other teams around the league in a trade for Lawrence. In addition to making the second All-Pro team twice, he’s also been a three-time Pro Bowl selection during his career.

Reportedly, negotiations between the Giants and Lawrence have been occurring over the past two years.

In 2024, Lawrence achieved nine sacks, a career high. Along with that, he’s seen former teammates such as the Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley and the Seattle Seahawks’ Leonard Williams and Julian Love win Super Bowls after leaving the New York Giants.

All of the above seem to be playing a major role in Lawrence wanting to join a new NFL team and achieve similar success, along with the sort of money he feels he deserves for his performance.

With the NFL Draft on the way next week, it’s possible the Giants could make a move to acquire more picks in part of a deal for their star nose tackle, but one would think Schoen and company would ensure he remains part of the roster under new head coach John Harbaugh.
