Harry Styles offered an emotional and solemn tribute while playing a concert on the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
“I just want to say before we get into the last couple of songs, obviously, being here today is difficult for a lot of people,” Styles, 32, said during his Friday, September 11, concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City, per social media footage. “I want us to take a moment together to think about the incredible resilience of this city.”
He continued, “I want us to take a second to think about the events that shaped this city, the events that shaped the century that we live in and for all the people who lost their lives that day, all the first responders who lost their lives that day [and] the countless people all over the world who lost their lives in the aftermath of what happened that day.”
Styles further noted that he didn’t have “really any words that [he could] say” regarding the 2001 tragedy.
“I remember it so well. I was 7 years old, I remember walking home from school and my world becoming completely different,” the British singer recalled. “There aren’t really words to describe something like that, but there’s a song by a legendary New Yorker Bill Evans called ‘Peace Piece,’ and … it’s always been an incredibly important song for me. It’s brought me a lot of peace, and I play it in moments of reflection.”
Styles invited his band member Yaffra to perform a rendition of “Peace Piece” for the concertgoers.
“I want you to join me, if we can all put our phones away and close our eyes and just contemplate, not only the incredible resilience of the city, but [also] our incredible resilience as humans to still, in times of great pain, have gone to find ways to love each other through all of it,” Styles concluded. “I want us to be together to remember how we find light in each other, like you do every day in these rooms.”
Styles began his Together, Together residency at MSG last month after multiple shows across the globe. The concert tour will conclude in 2027 with a handful of stadium performances.
“When we decided to do the 2026 tour, I knew it would be special but what you turned it into was far beyond what I could have imagined,” he wrote in an email sent to fans Wednesday, September 9. “I love playing music, I love being with all of you and being a part of the love and joy you all create together every night. That’s why I wanted you to be the first to know we will be adding 2027 dates, which honestly, at first I found daunting.”
He continued at the time, “Being an artist is the only life I’ve ever known really, I have been doing this since I was 16 years old, and I feel like the luckiest person in the world to still be sharing these moments with you. … I can’t wait for us to keep dancing with all our friends, I hope to see you there. Thank you for coming out to see us, and for all the love and support you’ve given me over the years.”
