The Los Angeles Rams pulled off the surprise of the 2026 NFL draft when they picked Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.

The move was met with shock and disappointment by Rams fans who clearly wanted another offensive weapon like USC receiver Makai Lemon or Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

General manager Les Snead told reporters after making the pick that taking Simpson was about setting up for the future with the team not knowing how many years 38-year-old reigning MVP Matthew Stafford has left.

But apparently adding one quarterback wasn’t enough for Snead. After the draft ended, the Rams added another signal-caller on an undrafted free-agent deal.

“Former Texas QB Matthew Caldwell is signing with the Rams, source said. After college stops at Jacksonville State, Gardner-Webb, Troy and then with the Longhorns, Caldwell’s winding football journey takes him to L.A.,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero posted on X.

Caldwell is well-traveled.

He spent five years in college, playing for four different teams. He started at Jacksonville State in 2021 before transferring to Gardner-Webb in 2022. After spending two years there, he moved onto Troy in 2024 before landing at Texas last season.

In his college career, Caldwell totaled 3,143 yards, 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also added another nine touchdowns on the ground in addition to 230 yards rushing.
